Few clubs in American golf carry a social history as layered as Hillcrest Country Club. Founded in the early twentieth century by prominent members of Los Angeles's Jewish community after they were turned away from other area clubs, Hillcrest became something far more than a golf course — it was a statement, a gathering place, and eventually a cultural institution. The Friars Table, where comedians including the Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, and George Burns held court for decades, is the stuff of Hollywood legend. The golf, it turns out, is serious too.
At 6,940 yards off the tips with a course rating of 73.7 and a slope of 133, this is not a course that flatters a loose swing. The par-71 layout plays firm and demanding — the missing par 5 on the card is felt, and scoring requires honest ball-striking rather than length alone. The broad fairways of Los Angeles's west side give way to greens that reward precision approach play.
The setting is quintessential affluent West LA: mature trees framing every hole, the Santa Monica Mountains as a distant backdrop, the light in late afternoon turning everything a particular shade of California gold. There's no grandstanding in the design — just a classic, well-maintained private course that has quietly earned its reputation over a century of steady, serious golf.
