Franklin Hills Country Club occupies a storied place in Michigan golf, and its pedigree is genuine: the course was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose fingerprints are on some of the greatest layouts in American golf history. Ross's work here follows his hallmarks — subtly crowned greens that shed approach shots to the sides, naturalistic routing that moves with the land rather than against it, and a strategic demand for shot placement over raw power. A par 71 layout suits his philosophy well; the course earns its difficulty through nuance, not length.
Franklin is an affluent village in Oakland County, sitting within the broader Detroit metropolitan area but feeling considerably removed from it — mature trees, rolling terrain, and the kind of established residential character that has always suited a private club of this caliber. The surrounding landscape gives the course a canopied, parkland feel through much of the round.
