Few courses in New England carry the academic pedigree of Orchards Golf Club, which sits on the grounds of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley. The course has a long and distinguished history as a tournament venue — it hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 2004, when Meg Mallon claimed the title in a performance that cemented Orchards' place on the national stage. The layout was originally designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose fingerprints are on so many of New England's finest courses, and his characteristic crowned greens and strategic bunkering remain central to the challenge here.
South Hadley sits in the Pioneer Valley, a stretch of the Connecticut River watershed flanked by low mountain ridges and rich with farmland. The region's distinct seasons — brilliant autumns, humid summers — shape the way Orchards plays throughout the year, and the mature tree canopy gives the course a classic, unhurried atmosphere.
As a private club affiliated with a liberal arts college, Orchards carries a sense of tradition and quiet prestige that distinguishes it from the typical New England country club.
