Few golf courses in the American West have arrived with the kind of instant critical attention that Tetherow did when it opened in 2008. Designed by David McLay Kidd — the Scottish architect who made his name building Bandon Dunes — Tetherow was a deliberate departure from the resort-friendly target golf of its era. Kidd created something rawer and more demanding: a linksland-influenced layout that rewards creativity and punishes timidity, with wide fairways that are nonetheless full of subtle fall-aways, fescue rough, and firm, fast greens that run in unexpected directions. It routinely draws comparisons to a windswept Scottish course transplanted onto the high desert plateau east of the Cascades.
Bend itself has become one of the most talked-about golf destinations in the Pacific Northwest, and Tetherow sits near the top of that conversation. The surrounding ponderosa pines and volcanic ridge views give it a distinct sense of place that no links course in Scotland could replicate.
The course has a reputation for humbling first-timers. Local knowledge matters here — where to miss, which greens to approach from the right angle — and many visitors find they want a second round simply to make sense of what just happened to them.
