Caledonia sits in the far southeastern corner of Minnesota, deep in the Driftless Area — the geologically distinct region that escaped the last ice age's flattening hand and kept its dramatic ridges, coulees, and hardwood bluffs intact. It's terrain unlike anything else in the upper Midwest, and it shapes everything about outdoor life here, including golf. Ma Cal Grove Country Club takes its name from this wooded landscape, and the property almost certainly makes the most of the rolling, tree-lined ground that defines Houston County.
As a private members' club serving a small regional community, Ma Cal Grove carries the character common to Minnesota's rural country clubs: a place where the membership knows each other, where the game is taken seriously but the atmosphere is unpretentious, and where the course itself reflects the land it was built on rather than any grand design ambition.
Southeastern Minnesota's golf season runs roughly May through October, framed by cool springs and vivid autumns when the bluff-country hardwoods turn. For anyone passing through the Driftless Area, this is the kind of course worth knowing a member to play.
