Castle Pines is one of Colorado's most celebrated private clubs, and its name carries genuine weight in American golf. Jack Nicklaus designed the course, which opened in 1981 on a dramatic piece of land south of Denver, and it quickly established itself as one of his signature mountain-foothills creations. For over two decades it hosted The International, a PGA Tour event that used the Stableford scoring format — a rarity on Tour — and the course's length and elevation changes made it a genuine examination even for the world's best players. It has consistently ranked among the top courses in Colorado and, by many measures, in the country.
The setting is the course's defining feature. Sitting in the rolling ponderosa pine country of the Front Range foothills, the terrain offers significant elevation change, sweeping views toward Pikes Peak, and a playing environment unlike anything in flat-land golf. The thin air at roughly 6,400 feet adds distance but demands precision.
For members, this is a serious, private golf club — no resort frills, no public tee times. The Nicklaus design rewards strategy and penalizes wayward shots, with the pines, native grasses, and natural topography serving as the architecture's most honest hazards.
