Cumberland sits on the quiet inland side of greater Portland, far enough from the coast to feel like genuine Maine countryside — tall pines, rocky outcroppings, and the kind of unhurried pace that the southern part of the state is rapidly losing to development. It's good golf country, and Val Halla has been the town's anchor course for decades, operated as a municipal facility that serves locals and visitors alike without the pretense of a private club.
Val Halla is a genuine community course in the best sense — the sort of place where a serious golfer can find a real challenge among tree-lined fairways and varied terrain, and a casual player can enjoy a round without feeling out of place. The layout makes use of the natural rolling topography of Cumberland, and the pine corridors give holes a defined, classic feel that rewards accuracy off the tee more than raw distance.
Greater Portland has a healthy and unpretentious golf culture, and Val Halla fits squarely within it. This is a course people return to regularly, not because it chases any particular prestige, but because it plays well, feels honest, and sits in a part of Maine that's genuinely worth spending a few hours outdoors.
