Few clubs carry the weight of history that Yarra Yarra does. Founded in 1929 and designed by Alister MacKenzie — the Scottish-born architect who gave the world Augusta National and Cypress Point — Yarra Yarra stands as one of the most significant courses on the Australian sandbelt, a stretch of Melbourne's southeastern suburbs that produced a concentration of great golf courses almost unmatched anywhere on earth. MacKenzie visited Australia in 1926 and left an indelible mark, and Yarra Yarra remains one of the purest expressions of his design philosophy in the Southern Hemisphere.
The sandbelt terrain does everything a golf architect could ask for: free-draining sandy soil, naturally undulating ground, and a native vegetation of tea-tree scrub and native grasses that frames holes with real character. The course rewards precision and imagination over power, with MacKenzie's trademark contoured greens demanding careful thought about angle of approach rather than simply attacking the pin.
Yarra Yarra sits comfortably among Australia's top-ranked courses and carries a reputation that draws serious golfers from around the world. As a private members' club, access is limited, which only deepens the reverence in which it is held.
