Few Somerset golf courses can claim a setting quite like this one. Orchardleigh sits within the grounds of the Orchardleigh Estate, a Victorian country house property whose parkland stretches across several hundred acres of Mendip fringe countryside near Frome. The course opened in 1996 and was designed by Brian Huggett, the Welsh Ryder Cup player turned course architect, who shaped the layout to work sympathetically with the estate's mature woodland, ornamental lakes, and rolling pastoral ground. The result is a parkland course with genuine visual drama — water features prominently on several holes, and the inherited landscape does much of the work a designer would normally have to manufacture.
Frome itself sits in the eastern corner of Somerset, close to the Wiltshire border, and the surrounding countryside has the soft, wooded character typical of this part of the county. It is not a golf-heavy region, which lends Orchardleigh a certain distinction as a destination worth seeking out.
As a private members' club, the course rewards repeat visitors who learn where the estate's natural features genuinely threaten, rather than merely decorate, a round.
