Maketewah Country Club carries a long and distinguished history in Cincinnati's golf landscape, having opened in the early 20th century as one of the city's premier private institutions. The club's name derives from a Native American word, and its grounds reflect the rolling, wooded terrain characteristic of southwestern Ohio's river hills — a setting that rewards both the eye and the thinking golfer. Donald Ross shaped the course, and his fingerprints remain in the subtly crowned greens and strategic bunkering that punish imprecision far more than they announce themselves.
Cincinnati has always punched above its weight as a golf city, and Maketewah sits comfortably among its most respected addresses. The club hosted significant amateur and professional competition during the mid-20th century, cementing a reputation that goes well beyond its quiet, members-only identity.
At par 71, the layout demands variety rather than pure power — a hallmark of Ross's design philosophy. Scoring here is earned through course management and touch around those demanding putting surfaces, not simply by overpowering the property.
