Borrego Springs sits in the heart of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park region, one of California's most dramatically remote landscapes — a sun-scorched valley ringed by the Santa Rosa and Peninsular mountain ranges, roughly 90 miles northeast of San Diego. The desert here is genuine and unforgiving: daytime temperatures in summer routinely climb past 110°F, which makes The Springs at Borrego a course best experienced from late fall through early spring, when the Sonoran desert floor cools and, in good years, erupts in wildflower blooms that draw visitors from across the state.
Desert golf in this setting means something more austere than the manicured resort courses of Palm Springs, an hour to the north. The surrounding terrain does the design work that money can't buy — stark alluvial fans, ocotillo and creosote scrub, wide-open skies, and a silence that makes a poor shot feel genuinely lonely.
Borrego Springs itself is a small, unincorporated community with a low-key, end-of-the-road character. Stargazing is taken seriously here — it's a designated International Dark Sky Community — and the overall atmosphere favors the traveler looking for something unhurried and far from the ordinary golf-resort circuit.
