Few heathland courses in England carry the atmosphere Hankley Common does. Laid out across open Surrey heath southwest of Farnham, the course occupies a stretch of land that has shaped English golf for well over a century — the club was founded in 1895, and the course bears the unmistakable influence of James Braid, the five-time Open Champion who revised and refined the layout in the early 20th century. Braid's touch is visible in the routing's natural economy: holes that work with the ridges and hollows of the common rather than against them, and fairways that reward a thinking player over a powerful one.
The setting itself is the draw. Heather, gorse, and Scots pine define every boundary, and the sandy subsoil drains so freely that the course plays firm and fast even through an English winter. The views across the common give the round a wild, unhurried quality that feels increasingly rare.
Hankley has long been regarded as one of the finest heathland tests outside the better-known Surrey marquee names, consistently appearing in serious rankings of England's best inland courses. It is a members' club, and the combination of genuine challenge and genuine beauty makes that membership fiercely valued.
