Perched on the elevated moorland above Bury, Walmersley Golf Club has been a fixture of the Greater Manchester golf scene since the late Victorian era, offering members a rugged, windswept test that feels a world removed from the urban sprawl spreading across the valley below. The course occupies genuine upland terrain — the kind of open, heathery ground that punishes wayward shots and rewards players who manage their ball flight. On a clear day the views across Lancashire are expansive enough to distract even the most focused competitor.
The layout plays to a par of 71, and while that single figure might suggest a shorter, more benign track, the prevailing westerly winds that sweep across the hilltop have a way of adding several strokes to any honest card. Club golfers who know these parts will tell you that Walmersley plays very differently depending on which direction the wind is blowing.
This is a members' club in the traditional northern English mold — unpretentious, genuinely community-rooted, and shaped by a landscape that does most of the architectural work itself.
