Sonora sits in the middle of the Edwards Plateau, a stretch of West Texas hill country where the land is defined by cedar, scrub oak, and limestone outcroppings, and where the sky tends to feel bigger than anywhere else in the state. It's a working ranch town, the seat of Sutton County, far enough from San Antonio and the I-10 corridor to feel genuinely remote. Golf out here isn't a resort amenity or a status symbol — it's a community institution, the kind of place where members have likely known each other for decades and a Sunday round is as much social ritual as sport.
Sonora Golf Club reflects that character. A par-72 layout in this part of Texas is shaped more by the natural topography of the Plateau than by architectural ambition, which usually means elevation changes, caliche fairways baked hard in summer, and greens that demand local knowledge to read well.
If you're passing through on I-10, it's well worth a detour. Courses like this one — honest, unhurried, rooted in their place — are increasingly rare.
