Few corners of Virginia carry as much colonial-era weight as the Northern Neck, the peninsula wedged between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers where King Carter Golf Club makes its home. The region takes its name from Robert "King" Carter, the 18th-century planter and land baron who once controlled more Virginia acreage than almost any private individual in the colonies — a figure whose shadow still falls across the landscape in the form of historic churches, family estates, and place names scattered across Lancaster County.
Irvington itself sits at the quieter, water-lapped end of the Northern Neck, a small town best known as the address of the Tides Inn resort, which has drawn Chesapeake Bay visitors since the late 1940s. Golf in this setting means playing through a low, coastal landscape shaped by tidal creeks, pines, and the particular soft light that comes off the bay.
