Few public golf courses in metro Denver carry as much civic meaning as Commonground. Opened in 2010 on the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, the course was built as a collaboration between the City of Aurora and the First Tee program, with a mission to make the game accessible to underserved youth and the broader community. The name isn't just branding — it reflects a genuine design intention that the course belong to everyone.
The layout occupies open high-plains terrain on Aurora's eastern side, where the land is wide and the sky is enormous. The Front Range provides a dramatic backdrop to the west on clear days, and the course plays through native grasses and reclaimed landscape that give it a distinctive, unspoiled feel uncommon for an urban municipal. The wind, as anywhere on Colorado's plains, is very much part of the test.
Commonground is routinely cited as one of the better public-access courses in the Denver metro area — a serious layout that doesn't price out the average golfer, which remains its whole point.
