Few private clubs on Hilton Head Island carry the reputation that Long Cove does. Pete Dye designed the course in 1981, and it stands as one of his most celebrated works in the American Southeast — a layout that draws serious golfers who want something more demanding and more interesting than the resort-style tracks that dominate the island. Dye's fingerprints are everywhere: railroad-tie bulkheads, forced carries over wetlands, and greens that reward precise approach angles rather than brute force. The membership is tight-knit and the setting deliberately unhurried.
Hilton Head itself sits within the Lowcountry, a coastal landscape defined by tidal marshes, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and saltwater inlets that push into the land from every direction. That terrain isn't just scenery here — it is the golf course, woven into nearly every hole. The par-71 layout uses that natural architecture to create problems a yardage number alone won't warn you about.
Long Cove has consistently ranked among South Carolina's best courses and has earned recognition in national rankings as well. It rewards patience and shot-making over power, and it tends to stay with you in the way that only a handful of courses do.
