Few Surrey heathland courses carry quite the social and competitive weight of Worplesdon. Founded in 1908, the club sits in the classic heathland belt southwest of London — that remarkable corridor of sandy, free-draining soil running through Woking and Wentworth country where golf has been played to a high standard for well over a century. The course was laid out across the heather, silver birch, and Scots pine that define this distinctly English golfing landscape, and it has been refined over the decades into one of the more respected private members' clubs in the region.
Worplesdon is perhaps best known nationally for its mixed foursomes competition, the Worplesdon Mixed Foursomes, a prestigious amateur event that has attracted top-level players since the 1920s and remains a cherished fixture on the English golfing calendar. Joyce Wethered, widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of her era, won the event 8 times.
Playing the course, you encounter the hallmarks of Surrey heathland golf: tight corridors framed by heather and pine, fast-running fairways, and the kind of quiet, unhurried atmosphere that makes a members' club in this part of England feel like a genuine escape from the city an hour to the northeast.
