Few private clubs in New England carry quite the quiet prestige of Country Club of New Hampshire, which occupies the rolling, glacier-carved terrain of Sutton — a small, unhurried town in the Merrimack Valley foothills, about 20 miles west of Concord. This is classic New Hampshire countryside: stone walls threading through second-growth forest, maples that turn violent shades of red and orange each fall, and ground that rises and falls with the kind of natural rhythm that rewards thoughtful course design.
As a members-only club, CCNH offers the kind of golf experience that has largely disappeared from the public-access world — unhurried rounds, a course maintained for repeat play rather than resort spectacle, and fairways that reward local knowledge accumulated over years of membership. Par-72 layouts of this era and region tend to reward patience and placement over raw power.
Northern New England golf has a short but intense season, typically May through October, which gives play here a certain urgency and appreciation that sunbelt courses rarely inspire.
