Castle Stuart

Few links courses anywhere in the world arrived with the immediate critical impact Castle Stuart did. Opened in 2009 and designed by Mark Parsons with Gil Hanse, the course sits on the southern shore of the Moray Firth just outside Inverness, where the views across the water toward the Black Isle are as dramatic as any in Scottish golf. It entered the world rankings almost immediately, and within 2 years of opening it was hosting the Scottish Open — a tournament it held multiple times, bringing the European Tour's strongest fields to the Scottish Highlands.

The design is rooted in golden-age principles: wide, rumpled fairways, bold contoured greens, and holes that can be played in multiple ways depending on wind and nerve. The Moray Firth means weather is a constant variable, and the course plays very differently in a stiff northerly than on a rare calm summer evening.

Inverness is the cultural capital of the Highlands, and Castle Stuart fits the region's scale — open, elemental, and quietly grand.
