Old Fold Manor holds a significant place in English golf history as the first heathland course ever built — predating the celebrated Surrey heathland layouts that would later define the genre. Opened in 1910 and designed by Harry Vardon, the 6-times Open Champion, the course sits on Hadley Common in the London Borough of Barnet, where protected heathland vegetation — heather, gorse, and silver birch — frames fairways in a way that feels genuinely wild despite the suburban address. The Open Amateur Championship has been held here, underlining a pedigree that its modest profile rarely advertises.
Hertfordshire sits at the northern edge of the Greater London commuter belt, but Hadley Common itself carries a medieval character reinforced by Hadley Green and the remnants of Enfield Chase. Playing Old Fold Manor means stepping into a landscape that has barely changed in a century.
