Surrey National opened in 1999 on the greensand ridge above Caterham, occupying a dramatic elevated site on the North Downs with sweeping views across the Weald that few courses in the Home Counties can match. The course was designed by golf architect David Williams and carved through mature woodland and heathland, giving it a character that leans more toward the heathland tradition — open, windswept stretches alternating with tree-lined corridors — than the manicured parkland that dominates much of Surrey's considerable golfing landscape.
The course quickly built a reputation as one of the more serious tests in the county, and it operates as a pay-and-play venue, which makes that quality of challenge genuinely accessible. The undulating terrain means elevation changes factor meaningfully into club selection throughout the round, and the views from the higher points of the property are a constant, welcome distraction.
Caterham sits at the edge of the M25 corridor, close enough to London to draw a busy and competitive clientele, yet the Downs ridge gives Surrey National a genuine sense of escape from the suburban sprawl below.
