Playa Serena sits on the Costa de Almería in one of Spain's sunniest corners — Roquetas de Mar receives more annual sunshine hours than almost anywhere else in continental Europe, and that light has a particular quality here, sharp and bleaching, bouncing off the salt flats and plastic greenhouse sea that define this part of Andalucía. The course emerged in the 1970s alongside the resort development that transformed this stretch of coastline, designed to serve the expanding tourist infrastructure of what was then a rapidly growing beach destination.
The layout occupies flat, coastal terrain typical of the Almería shoreline, where prevailing winds off the Mediterranean become the primary defense rather than significant elevation change. Palm trees, tamarisk, and drought-tolerant Mediterranean plantings line the fairways, giving the course a genuine Andalusian resort character without pretending to be something grander than it is.
For visiting golfers, Playa Serena functions as an accessible, sun-drenched holiday round — relaxed in atmosphere, straightforward enough for mid-to-high handicappers, and paired naturally with the beaches and seafood of a town that takes its leisure seriously.
