Akarana Golf Course

Few golf clubs in New Zealand carry the civic weight of Akarana. Founded in 1912 and operating from its home in Ōrākei on Auckland's eastern bays, the club takes its name from the Māori name for the Auckland isthmus — a fitting tribute given how deeply it belongs to this stretch of the city. The course was designed by the influential New Zealand architect Alex Russell, and it occupies rolling volcanic terrain that is characteristic of inner Auckland, with tight fairways threading between mature trees and the land rising and falling in ways that demand both local knowledge and proper shot-making.

Auckland's climate — warm, humid summers and mild but breezy winters — means Akarana holds its colour year-round, though the wind off the Waitematā Harbour can shift conditions dramatically from one round to the next. The surrounding Ōrākei basin gives the course a genuine sense of remove from the urban density that presses close on all sides.

This is an established members' club with a strong competitive tradition within New Zealand amateur golf. Visitors are welcome at certain times, and the experience feels authentically local — unpretentious, well-maintained, and steeped in over a century of the game on the North Island's largest city.
