Few courses anywhere in the world have changed so little since their original layout. Brora sits on the far north coast of Sutherland, a links traced by James Braid in 1923 over ground that cattle still graze to this day — the club maintains a herd whose movement across the fairways is simply part of the round. Wooden stake markers warn players of the electric fencing used to manage the animals. It is gloriously, unapologetically old-fashioned, and better for it.
The course occupies a narrow strip of duneland between the North Sea and the Highland interior, with the Sutherland hills rising to the west and Ben Bhraggie visible on the skyline. The turf is firm, fast, and close-cropped in the manner links turf should be, and the wind off the Moray Firth dictates everything. At par 70 it plays shorter than many championship tests, but Brora routinely humbles golfers who underestimate it.
This is the very far north of Scottish golf — beyond Dornoch, beyond the tourist trail. The village itself is a quiet former coal and fishing town, and the course carries that same unassuming character. No artifice, no theater. Just a very good links left largely alone.
