Kiawah Island carries one of the most storied reputations in American golf, home to the Ocean Course's legendary "War by the Shore" Ryder Cup in 1991 and multiple major championships since. Oak Point sits within that same resort community but offers a very different experience — a Clyde Johnston design that winds through maritime forest and marsh rather than along the Atlantic coastline, giving it a quieter, more sheltered character than its famous neighbor.
The lowcountry setting defines how the course plays and feels. Tidal creeks, spartina marshes, and ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss frame the layout throughout, and the wildlife — herons, egrets, alligators — is a constant presence. Wind still matters here, as it does everywhere on Kiawah, but the tree canopy provides enough cover to make Oak Point feel like a genuinely different round from the exposed, links-style tests the island is known for.
For visitors to Kiawah, Oak Point tends to be the less-discussed option, which is part of its appeal. It rewards those who look past the Ocean Course headlines and want a round that feels rooted in the landscape rather than built to intimidate.
