Few courses have earned a place in golf lore quite like Talamore, which opened in 1991 with a Rees Jones design that immediately drew attention for its routing through the longleaf pine forests of the Sandhills. Jones leaned into the natural terrain — the sandy soil, the elevation changes, the corridors cut through tall pines — to create a layout that feels rooted in this particular stretch of North Carolina rather than imposed upon it. The course is probably best known for its llama caddies, a genuine quirk that became a signature attraction and put Talamore on golf's cultural map long before social media made novelty viral.
Southern Pines sits at the heart of one of America's great golf regions, sharing the Sandhills with Pinehurst, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and a constellation of other celebrated tracks. The sandy, fast-draining soil and mild Piedmont climate make this an almost year-round destination, and the area draws serious golfers from across the country.
Talamore offers resort-style access to a Sandhills design of genuine quality — not a consolation prize for those who can't get onto Pinehurst No. 2, but a worthwhile destination in its own right.
