Few courses in the southeast of England carry quite the quiet authority that Orsett does. Founded in 1899, it is one of Essex's oldest clubs, and it has spent well over a century earning its reputation as the county's most respected inland test. The heathland layout sits on classic golfing terrain — sandy subsoil, heather, gorse, and the kind of firm, fast-running turf that rewards thoughtful course management over raw power. It has hosted numerous county and regional events across its history, and the calibre of member it has produced reflects how seriously the game is taken here.
The course sits in the flat Thames estuary belt of southern Essex, greenbelt land that has preserved its open, unhurried character while Thurrock and its surroundings have grown around it. Wind is a constant and honest arbiter — what plays straightforward on a calm day becomes an examination on an Essex bluster.
For visiting golfers, Orsett occupies that rare position: a genuinely traditional private members' club that still welcomes outside play, offering a standard of golf that outstrips its relatively low profile beyond the county.
