Military life runs on routine and discipline, but the golf at Fort Sam Houston has long offered something more relaxed — a place where soldiers, officers, retirees, and their families have gathered to play the game on one of the oldest active military installations in the United States. Fort Sam Houston, a National Historic Landmark on the northeast edge of San Antonio, has been a cornerstone of the U.S. Army's presence in Texas since the 1870s, and the golf course carries that same deep sense of institutional history.
San Antonio itself is a serious golf town, with a warm South Texas climate that keeps the game playable nearly year-round. The terrain here is characteristic of the region — relatively flat to gently rolling Hill Country transition land, with the live oaks and native vegetation that define the Texas interior giving the course its visual texture.
Access is limited to active duty military, retirees, Department of Defense personnel, and authorized guests, which gives the course an unhurried, members-club feel without the formality. For those who qualify, it represents genuine value in a city with no shortage of solid places to play.
