Few stretches of American golf real estate have absorbed as much design talent as the Grand Strand, and Wachesaw Plantation East represents one of the more serious efforts along that corridor. The course was crafted by Clyde Johnston, a Carolinas-based architect whose work tends to favor strategic layouts over brute-force tests — courses where course management rewards patient, thinking players rather than simply punishing the long hitter.
The "East" designation reflects its relationship to the original Wachesaw Plantation Club, a private Nicklaus Design layout that occupies the same storied plantation grounds along the Waccamaw Neck. That history — rice plantation country, inland waterways, ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss — gives this corner of Horry County a genuine sense of place that the best Myrtle Beach courses manage to translate onto the turf rather than bulldoze in favor of resort uniformity.
As a public-access option within a region saturated with choices, Wachesaw East has built a reputation as a course worth seeking out for its conditioning and character — a genuine layout in a market that doesn't always demand one.
