광주CC occupies a quietly dramatic stretch of inland Jeollanam-do, routed through the forested ridges and river valleys of Gokseong-gun — a county better known among Koreans for its scenic Seomjingang River corridor and the old Gokseong steam railway than for golf tourism. That rural, unhurried character seeps into the course itself. The layout moves with the natural contours of the surrounding hills rather than against them, giving rounds here a more organic feel than the heavily manicured resort courses that dominate Korea's golf landscape.
As the name suggests, the club has long served the greater Gwangju metropolitan region, whose golfers make the roughly hour-long drive south into the countryside to play. That metropolitan connection historically gave the club a members' club identity — a place for regulars who know the subtleties of each hole rather than a destination course chasing outside visitors or rankings.
Jeollanam-do's mild southwestern climate, shaped by proximity to both the Sobaek Mountains and the southern coast, means a reasonably long playing season by Korean standards, and the landscape through autumn — when the surrounding hardwood forests turn — makes for some of the more visually rewarding golf in the Honam region.
