Royal Fox Golf Club carries one of the more regal names in the Chicago metropolitan golf scene, and the course largely delivers on that promise. Designed by Ken Killian — the Chicago-area architect responsible for a number of well-regarded layouts across the region — Royal Fox opened in the late 1980s as a private club anchoring a residential community in St. Charles. Killian's work here reflects his trademark attention to strategic bunkering and varied hole shapes, producing a course that rewards thoughtful play over sheer power.
St. Charles sits along the Fox River in the western suburbs of Chicago, about 35 miles from the city, where the gently rolling Kane County terrain gives designers enough contour to work with without resorting to artifice. The area has a healthy private club culture, and Royal Fox holds its own in that competitive company.
The par-71 layout — shorter than a conventional par-72 — means the course earns its difficulty through precision rather than length. As a members-only club, it maintains an unhurried, well-appointed atmosphere that keeps the focus squarely on the golf.
