Few public courses in the Chicago area carry the pedigree of Heritage Bluffs. Designed by Rick Jacobson and opened in 1993, it was built on land owned by the Channahon Park District, making it a rare example of a genuinely high-caliber public course developed through municipal stewardship rather than private development. It quickly earned a reputation as one of the better public-access values in the region, drawing players from well beyond the southwest suburbs.
The course plays across the bluffs above the Des Plaines River valley, and that elevated terrain is central to its identity. Significant changes in grade give many holes a drama and visual character you don't typically find on the flat Illinois prairie — tee shots that fall away, approach angles shaped by the land, and wide-open views across the river corridor. The design rewards players who take the time to read the ground rather than simply aim at flags.
Channahon sits at the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, and the surrounding forest preserves and waterways give the course a genuine sense of remove from the suburban sprawl encroaching on much of the region's public golf.
