Cedar Crest Golf Course

Dallas's oldest municipal golf course, Cedar Crest has been a fixture of the city's public golf life since it opened in 1916. Designed by A.W. Tillinghast — the same architect behind Winged Foot, Baltusrol, and San Francisco Golf Club — it stands as one of the most historically significant municipal layouts in the American South. The course hosted the 1927 PGA Championship, won by Walter Hagen, making it one of the few public facilities in the country to have staged a major championship in the early professional era.

The layout sits in the southern part of Dallas along the Trinity River corridor, and the terrain reflects that — gently rolling land with mature trees that give the course a sense of age and permanence unusual for a muni. Tillinghast's design sensibility, even in a public-access context, favored strategic interest over brute difficulty.

For Dallas golfers, Cedar Crest carries a weight that newer, flashier courses in the Metroplex simply don't. Playing it feels like a connection to the city's deeper golf history.
