Higo Sun Valley Country Club sits on the volcanic uplands east of Kumamoto City, in Nishihara Village — a community that became tragically known worldwide after the devastating April 2016 earthquakes struck the region with particular force. The course occupies terrain shaped by the ancient geology of the Aso caldera system, and playing here means moving through a landscape of grass-covered hillsides, exposed volcanic rock, and views that gesture toward Aso's iconic crater rim on clear days. This is highland golf in the truest sense, where the air is noticeably cooler than Kumamoto's lowland heat and morning mist is a regular companion.
Nishihara's rural character keeps the atmosphere unhurried and grounded — far removed from the resort polish of better-known Kyushu destinations. Sun Valley is the kind of members' and visitor course that serves the regional golf community rather than chasing rankings, and the experience reflects that honest character.
Kumamoto Prefecture has a quietly strong golf culture, and the Aso region's dramatic scenery makes even an ordinary round feel anything but ordinary.
