Golfplatz Riederalp

Riederalp is a car-free Alpine village perched at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level in the canton of Valais, accessible only by cable car from the Rhône Valley below. The golf course here is genuinely one of the most unusual settings in European golf — a short mountain layout where the visual drama far outstrips the yardage. Playing it means sharing an elevated plateau with sweeping views toward the Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest glacier in the Alps. The surrounding landscape of larch forest, Alpine meadow, and permanent snowfields makes for a sensory experience no lowland course can replicate.

Because of the altitude and the brief mountain summer, the course operates only from roughly June through October. The thin air means the ball travels noticeably farther than you'd expect, and the terrain is anything but flat — mountain golf demands a different kind of course management, with uneven lies and elevation changes shaping nearly every shot.

This is golf for the experience first, the scorecard second. Visitors tend to arrive as much for the setting as the sport, and the combination of the Aletschwald nature reserve, the glacier views, and the village's car-free tranquility gives a round here a quality that resort courses at sea level simply cannot manufacture.
