Homosassa Springs sits in Citrus County along Florida's Nature Coast, a stretch of the Gulf side defined by spring-fed rivers, old cypress stands, and one of the state's least-developed coastlines. It's fishing and manatee country more than golf country, which makes the presence of a course here feel genuinely local rather than resort-manufactured — the kind of place regulars know and visitors stumble onto by happy accident.
The name Pine Barrens evokes the scrubby, sandy Florida interior rather than the manicured palm-lined fairways associated with the state's tourist corridors. That landscape — longleaf pine, wiregrass, open sky — tends to produce courses with a rawer, more natural character, where the land itself does much of the design work and the challenge comes from reading the ground rather than avoiding water features stacked on a developer's blueprint.
A par 71 layout suggests the routing makes room for some shorter, more strategic holes — moments where position off the tee matters more than distance. For golfers who prefer courses with a sense of place over polish, this corner of Florida's Nature Coast offers the real thing.
