Hartley Wintney Golf Club sits in the Hampshire village of the same name, just off the M3 corridor between Basingstoke and the Surrey border — commuter country, but greener and more rural than that description suggests. The course occupies heathland and parkland terrain typical of this part of northern Hampshire, where sandy soils, heather, and mature pine and birch woodland create conditions that wouldn't look out of place in Surrey's famous belt of heathland courses a few miles to the northeast.
The club has a genuine members' course feel — unpretentious, community-rooted, and well used across the week rather than a destination layout chasing rankings. At par 71, it plays slightly shorter than a full championship test, but heathland layouts in this region tend to reward precision and course management over power, and the natural ground conditions typically allow for firm, fast turf that adds variety to approach play through much of the season.
Hook itself is a small market-road town that punches above its weight for everyday amenities, and the broader north Hampshire area offers solid golf across several nearby clubs. Hartley Wintney fits naturally into that local fabric.
