Few courses in Scottish golf have arrived with quite the pedigree of The Renaissance. Designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2008, it sits on the East Lothian coastline near North Berwick, occupying linksland that puts it in one of the most storied golfing corridors on earth — neighbours to Muirfield, North Berwick West Links, and Gullane, among others. Doak's routing makes full use of the duneland terrain, with holes that tumble and turn through natural contours rather than imposing a manufactured layout on the ground. The club gained further prominence as the permanent host of the Senior Open Championship, bringing European Tour-level scrutiny to a course still relatively young by Scottish links standards.
East Lothian's coastal strip is the kind of place where the wind is a genuine club in every opponent's bag. The Firth of Forth sits close at hand, with views toward the Bass Rock and the hills of Fife completing a landscape that makes a round here feel distinctly rooted in place.
As a private members' club, The Renaissance carries an air of quiet seriousness. Visitors who earn a tee time encounter a course that rewards ground game thinking and demands patience — a proper links test that has already earned considerable respect within the game's more discerning circles.
