Roxby Downs sits about 560 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia's outback, a mining town built almost entirely from scratch in the 1980s to service the Olympic Dam copper, uranium, and gold operation — one of the largest ore deposits on Earth. The golf club grew out of that same pioneering spirit, and playing here means accepting the landscape on its own terms: red earth, sparse scrub, and a sky that seems wider than anywhere else on the continent.
Desert and outback courses in this part of Australia typically play on treated or sand-scrape fairways, with browns rather than grass greens a common feature in more remote layouts — conditions that demand a different kind of short-game adaptability from visitors used to lush, irrigated turf. The heat and low humidity also mean the ball flies notably farther than at sea level on the coast.
