Few settings in American golf match what surrounds this course. Rockwood sits on the western shore of Moosehead Lake, Maine's largest lake and one of the largest in the entire eastern United States, with the dramatic volcanic cliff face of Mount Kineo rising from the water directly across the narrows. Playing golf here means doing so against one of the more genuinely wild backdrops in the country — moose sightings on the fairways are not folklore.
Mount Kineo itself has a long history as a resort destination stretching back to the late 19th century, when the grand Kineo House hotel drew wealthy visitors by steamboat. Golf was part of that original resort culture, and the course carries that legacy of a time when remote lakeside retreats built leisure facilities to match their ambitions.
Getting to Rockwood requires real commitment — it sits deep in the Maine North Woods, well off the tourist corridor. That remoteness is exactly the point. This is golf for people who want to feel genuinely far from everywhere else.
