Few settings in Caribbean golf match the drama of El Conquistador Resort, perched on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico above the Passage between the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea. The resort itself is one of the island's landmark properties, and the golf course shares that sense of elevation and spectacle — fairways carved into the hillside terrain deliver sweeping views of the water, the islands of the Spanish Virgin Islands, and on clear days, the distant outline of St. Thomas.
Playing golf here means contending with the topography as much as the layout. The course drops and climbs through terrain that bears little resemblance to the flat resort tracks found elsewhere in the Caribbean, and the trade winds that funnel through this corner of the island add a variable element that changes club selection from hour to hour.
Fajardo itself sits at the gateway to Puerto Rico's east coast, a working port town surrounded by bioluminescent bays, mangroves, and coral reefs. The golf fits that context — scenic, a little wild, and entirely of its place.
