Few Las Vegas golf experiences feel as deliberately removed from the Strip's spectacle as Desert Pines. Opened in 1996 and designed by Perry Dye, the course was built around a bold, unusual concept: importing thousands of Carolina pines to create a forest-lined layout in the heart of the Nevada desert. The result is a course that looks and plays nothing like its surroundings — tree-lined fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and the tight corridors reward shotmakers over bombers.
The design leans heavily on the contrast between the arid landscape just beyond the property and the lush, almost South Carolina-ish atmosphere within it. It plays as a public course and has historically attracted both locals tired of the resort-golf circuit and visitors wanting something more grounded than the high-production showpieces that dominate the Vegas golf market.
Las Vegas sits in the Mojave Desert at roughly 2,000 feet of elevation, which means the air is thin and dry — a combination that tends to add distance to every club in the bag, something first-timers here often discover with a smile on the first few holes.
