Western Gailes

Few links courses anywhere are arranged quite like Western Gailes. The layout runs in 2 straight out-and-back strips along a narrow corridor of duneland between the Glasgow to Ayr railway line and the Firth of Clyde, meaning the wind — whatever direction it arrives from — is inescapable. That exposed, elemental quality is precisely what makes it so compelling.

Founded in 1897 and long regarded as one of Scotland's finest private members' clubs, Western Gailes has served as a qualifying venue for The Open Championship on multiple occasions when the rota has visited Royal Troon, just a few miles down the Ayrshire coast. The course earns consistent placement among Scotland's top links, admired for the quality and variety of its natural turf and the strategic demands of its bunkering. The 7th hole, playing directly toward the sea, is widely considered one of the great short holes in Scottish golf.

The Ayrshire coast is serious links country — Troon, Prestwick, and Turnberry are all near neighbors — and Western Gailes fits comfortably among them. Glasgow golfers have made the journey south here for well over a century.
