Few public courses in Ocean County carry the same workhorse reputation as Bey Lea. Owned and operated by Ocean County itself, it has served as the everyday home course for generations of Shore-area golfers — the kind of place where junior programs fill weekend mornings and regulars have played the same routing so many times they can read every break from memory. That longevity and accessibility give it a community character that private clubs rarely replicate.
Toms River sits at the heart of the Jersey Shore's inland geography, where the coastal plain flattens out and the landscape is defined by pitch pines, scrub oaks, and the tidal waterways feeding Barnegat Bay. Bey Lea reflects that environment — a parkland-style layout routed through the characteristic vegetation of the Pinelands edge, giving it a sense of place that's distinctly South Jersey rather than generic suburban golf.
At par 71, the course plays slightly shorter than a regulation layout, which tends to reward placement and course management over raw power. For Ocean County residents especially, it remains one of the most accessible and well-used public golf facilities on the Shore.
