Shadow Ridge opened in 2000 as the centerpiece of a Marriott resort community in Palm Desert, designed by Nick Faldo and his design partner IMG Golf. It was one of the more ambitious resort course projects of that era in the Coachella Valley — built to championship standards while still serving everyday resort guests — and Faldo's fingerprints show in the strategic bunkering and the demand for precise shot-shaping over raw power.
The course sits in the western end of the valley, where the Santa Rosa Mountains rise sharply to the south and the desert light shifts dramatically through the afternoon. Conditions here are quintessentially Coachella: firm, fast turf for much of the year, persistent wind off the mountains, and the kind of sunshine that makes even a mid-round frustration feel forgivable. Palm Desert itself anchors the valley's resort golf corridor, putting Shadow Ridge within easy reach of dozens of other courses.
As a resort layout it welcomes a wide range of players, but it rewards thoughtfulness — the par-71 routing has enough variety that scorecards rarely tell the full story of a round here.
