Few courses in Australia carry the same sense of earned reputation as The Lakes Golf Club. Designed by the prolific Australian architect Kerry Roebuck and opened in 1967, it occupies a stretch of land between Sydney Airport and the eastern suburbs that somehow transforms the urban surroundings into a genuine championship test. The layout was later refined and has long been regarded as one of Sydney's elite private clubs, hosting multiple editions of the Australian Open — a fact that places it in rarefied company on the national stage.
The course takes its name seriously. Water comes into play on the majority of holes, and the prevailing coastal winds off Botany Bay add a layer of difficulty that no scorecard figure can fully capture. Reading the wind at The Lakes is its own skill set, and even scratch golfers have been humbled on seemingly straightforward par 4s when the breeze turns.
Eastlakes sits just minutes from the CBD, yet the club maintains a distinctly members-first culture. The mature trees, the lake reflections, and the occasional roar of a departing aircraft overhead give The Lakes a character entirely its own — unmistakably Sydney, unmistakably serious golf.
