Few courses in the Irish midlands carry the design pedigree of Esker Hills. Laid out by Christy O'Connor Jr. — the man behind some of Ireland's most celebrated modern layouts — the course makes dramatic use of the glacial esker ridges that give it both its name and its personality. These ancient gravel ridges, deposited by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago, create a rolling, tumbling terrain that is genuinely unlike anything else in the region, rewarding golfers who can shape shots and read land rather than simply hit it long and straight.
Tullamore sits at the quiet heart of County Offaly, a county more associated with bogland and the Grand Canal than with tournament golf, which makes Esker Hills something of a revelation for visitors expecting flat midland terrain. The course opened in 1996 and quickly earned a strong reputation on the Irish golf circuit, drawing players willing to make the journey off the main tourist trail.
A par 70 suggests a shorter test, but the routing squeezes genuine variety and challenge out of its terrain, and the elevated tees and tumbling fairways make distance judgement consistently tricky. This is a course that rewards a return visit.
