Few regions shaped American golf's mid-century culture quite like the Catskill Mountains of New York. For decades, the resort towns of Sullivan County — South Fallsburg among them — served the vast Borscht Belt hotel circuit, and golf courses were as essential to those Catskill resorts as the dining rooms and entertainment halls. Tarry Brae carries that lineage, a course rooted in an era when city dwellers escaped the summer heat by heading north into these forested hills.
The terrain here does the heavy lifting that flat layouts can only dream of. The Catskills offer genuine elevation change, wooded corridors, and the kind of rolling topography that rewards course designers and punishes inattentive players in equal measure. A par 72 layout on this land likely presents a very different set of problems on the back nine than the front.
South Fallsburg today is quieter than its Borscht Belt peak, but the golf endures. For players willing to venture into the interior of New York State, courses like Tarry Brae offer history, scenery, and a pace of play that the metropolitan courses can rarely match.
