Few stretches of Scottish coastline have produced as concentrated a collection of great links courses as East Lothian's Firth of Forth shore, and Craigielaw sits squarely in that distinguished company. Opened in 2001 and designed by Donald Steel — one of Britain's most respected golf architects and a former golf correspondent for The Sunday Telegraph — the course was built on genuine links land between Aberlady Bay and the Firth, with views across the water to Fife and the hills beyond. Steel's design philosophy favors courses that feel as though they belong to their landscape rather than having been imposed upon it, and Craigielaw reflects that sensibility throughout.
The terrain here is authentic links ground: firm, fast-running fairways, natural dune ridges, and the kind of wind that rewrites your club selection from one visit to the next. Aberlady Bay, a nature reserve immediately adjacent, gives the setting a wildness that many newer courses can only approximate.
East Lothian as a golfing destination punches well above its modest geography — Muirfield, Gullane, and North Berwick are all within a short drive. Craigielaw holds its own in that company, offering genuine links golf without the waiting lists or formality of its more storied neighbors.
